Separated from his wife, Evelyn, after the death of their infant son, Nathan Grey, the Earl of Lindsey, returns to London when he discovers that Evelyn has been inadvertently caught up in the scandals involving Princess Caroline, but when he tries to remove her from the city, he is put into the position of having to woo her all over again.
